Reusing an Old PC as a Server Part 1

January 27th, 2008

Using Free Software and Equipment that you Already Own

Title-Picture

Goal: Provide instructions to turn an old computer into a server that you can control remotely and use for various handy purposes.

Assumptions: You have, or can an old computer that is no longer used and a basic router for your home network.

So let’s say you hit the technology jackpot and score yourself a shiny new super computer. (OK, maybe just a plain old new computer.) Congratulations! Now, after you get over the initial euphoria of setting up your new workhorse, you might start wondering what to do with your faithful old friend. (OK, annoying old dinosaur.)

Should you…..

Let’s take that doddering old codger and breathe some new life into it.

Funny Night Out on the Town

Me, Some Cheerleaders, and Free Stuff. Yay!

collage Last night my wife and I went to a bar in Hoboken, NJ to meet her friend Joel (Jo-El, not Jole) from work. We were at this bar Texas-Arizona, where the New Jersey Devils hockey team and Z100 radio station were doing a publicity event. The event was showing people how easy it is to take the PATH train (a light rail system in Northern NJ and New York City) to the new hockey stadium in Newark, NJ.

There were some of the Devil’s cheerleaders (The Power Players) rounding up contestants for free tickets to the game going on in an hour. Well, once the cheerleaders saw how hot I am (yeah, that’s the reason) they picked us as one of the winners.

24 Web Services to Help You Get Things Done

January 17th, 2008

Get Things Done Using These Web Base Applications

Services

Goal of this article: Provide a list of useful web based applications and services that will help boost your productivity and enjoyment.

As a follow up to my previous 32 Free Applications that I Could Not Live Without article, I decided to list several web based applications and services that I also love. So many of the things that you used to do on your desktop can now be done on the web. This allows you to bring your apps from home, to work, to your friend’s houses. If you’re willing to sacrifice a few features (very few actually) you can do just about anything on the web these days. Here are some of my favorites.

Who Really Owns the Interwebs?

As I started compiling this list, I noticed that I use a lot of service provided by the major internet players. I listed the primary ownership of each service. 6 Google and 6 Yahoo properties made the list. Nobody else had more than one. I may have to consider spreading the love around a little more.

Categories

I divided the services into 5 categories:

  • Communications
  • Browsing
  • Media
  • Social Networking
  • Productivity

Turbocharge Your Productivity for Free

free-apps

Goal of this article: Provide a list of excellent, free applications that will help you get the most out of your computing experience.

Your computer can do so much, but there is always some piece of software that you need first. Lots of applications are complicated and expensive enough to stop people from taking full advantage of their computers. Don’t despair, there are plenty of wonderful, free applications that will change the way that you look at your computer.

Types of Software

I divided the applications into 6 categories:

  • Browsing
  • Communications
  • Media
  • Utilities
  • Developing
  • Blogging

Boost Your Creativity and Productivity by Using a Simple Notebook

An Ode to the Humble Moleskine Notebook

juno_galleryposter

Trying to find ways to capture your creative bursts and brainstorms and use them effectively? One of the greatest tools ever invented is a humble notebook. Now I love computers, word processors, and databases, but so many of my best ideas and projects start out as scribbles on paper. In fact, most of the creative, successful people that I see use notes as part of their orgnizational and creative process.

Famous Note Takers:

Da Vinci, Bill Gates, Thomas Edison, (I’m still convinced that O.J. Simpson’s famous legal pad is what actually kept him out of prison.) With this list of success stories, you could surely benefit from taking solid notes. Read more…

Movie Review – Juno – Great Date Movie

January 3rd, 2008

Funny, Cute, Warm, with a Little Edge

juno_galleryposter

Title: Juno

Release Date: 2007

Director: Jason Reitman

My wife and I saw the trailer during a few other movies and thought that it looked like a good movie. We both love the chick flicks indie romantic comedy stuff. We were off from work and decided to give it a shot. Wow, we were both glad we did. Don’t get me wrong, it’s no Citizen Kane, but it’s a really good movie.

Product Review – Panasonic Lumix TZ3 Camera

January 1st, 2008

Big, Beautiful Zoom and Screen Look and Feel Good

collage My wife bought me a Panasonic Lumix TZ3 Camera for Christmas. (She must have read my 28 Great Christmas Gifts article.) I was torn between this and a Canon Powershot G9. The Canon G9 allows you to attach external lenses and flash, plus it shoots Raw images. The Panasonic Lumix TZ3 is smaller, cheaper, and has a 10x zoom. It was a toss up. My wife made the final decision for me. (Her and the price tags.)I’ve spent a little time with it and I’m ready to pass judgement. Read more…
