Blog Action Day - Help Save the Environment

Save the Earth, Save Some Money, and Maybe Win a Nobel Prize

Today (October 15th) is Blog Action Day. Blog Action Day is an effort set up by a group of bloggers interested in helping save the environment. Their idea was to get as many blogs as possible (12,000 and counting) to post an article on the same topic “Saving the Environment” all on the same day.
Here is their basic mission and idea:
On October 15th, bloggers around the web will unite to put a single important issue on everyone’s mind - the environment. Every blogger will post about the environment in their own way and relating to their own topic. Our aim is to get everyone talking towards a better future.
Sure, I think that we should get off fossil fuels. (Not just for the environment.) Sure, I think that we should chase down and stop everyone polluting the air, land, and water. But, really, what are the odds on that happening? Well, here is my two cents on the issue.
What I do have a lot of control over is myself. I can turn lights, heat, and water on or off. I can waste as much or little as I want. You know what, so can you!
Here are a few things that we can all do to help then environment (and our wallets) every day:
- Make sure that the lights and water are OFF when you’re done.
- Put on a sweater. Seriously you’ll live. Adjust the heat down and the AC up by a few degrees and save a lot.
- Use the ceiling fans in your house. They save a lot of energy and work surprisingly well.
- Take faster showers. Lather, Rinse, Get out! Pretend you’re in prison 3 times a week and think how much you’ll save.
- Walk a little more. Your belly will like it as much as the planet will.
- Want to increase your gas mileage by 30 - 50%, read this article. (Yes, even if you have a hummer it will work!)
- Go around the house and seal up all of the areas where heat and cold can get in. Use this spray foam for tough areas. It’s not just good for energy savings, it’s fun to mess with.
If you don’t like my ideas, or if you wanted to do a little more, that would be great. There are a bunch of places that would love your time, energy, money, publicity, well wishes, or anything else that you could offer.
